Lori’s “The Biden” (sandwich), bike trail Gordon Pond @ Cape Henlapon State Park to Herring Point overlook, Arena lunch, Baltimore street, – Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

I’ve heard about this area for years from DC friends who visit the beach but finally got to visit since my sister and her husband bought a condo here, on the edge of a tree-lined narrow lake with a pedestrian bridge that leads through a residential neighborhood to the beach, an easy 12 minute walk past pretty cottages with screened-in porches, shingles and glorious crepe myrtle in deep reds, purples and burnt orange. The Boardwalk between the dunes and the ocean leads into the town of Rehoboth, past arcades with whack-a-mole and other games, overpriced lemonade, custard, fries and pizza stands.

We had an excellent lunch at lori’s, a little cafe on Baltimore street, which is a quiet refuge from the livelier, touristier main drag, Rehoboth boulevard. I had The Biden (how could I not?) in honor of our president, a longtime resident of this town. Joe likes the tuna sandwich and Jill likes the chicken salad sandwich so the Biden is a half of each. Perfect. Although huge. Easily could have shared it.

Herring Point (state park bike ride)

We rode bikes to Cape Henlopen state park north of town on a pleasant crushed gravel trail that led though some woods and low salt marshes with lots of white heron wading in the water or seagulls flying low across the yellow and green marshes and tidal pools. At Gordon Pond we rode on a long raised trail across a marsh to Herring point where we had a spectacular view of the wilder beaches. We watched surfers, swimmers and even a dark dolphin bobbing up and down gracefully in the distance.

Rehoboth Beach scenes

Lunch was at The arena, huge salads. not quite as good as Lori’s but worth a visit. There is also an excellent book store downtown on Rehoboth Blvd. We had excellent crab cakes and ceviche at Shorebreak Lodge downtown and then Hershey ice cream at another President Biden favorite, Double Dippers.
