L.Woods/Chicago (by way of Wisconsin) and Sapp Brothers Gas West of Peru, Illinois

Uneventful drive from Des Moines to Chicago today on Interstate 80, which is the way I like it although it was strange to think that dirck was flying above me somewhere near on a flight to Chicago and then frankfort and Warsaw. The highlight of the drive was cheap gas at Sapp Brothers ($1.93 a gallon) just west of the bigger Peru exit where the gas was $2.24.

MAT, emma, Rocket and I had dinner at L.Woods in Lincoln woods, just west of the Edgewater neighborhood. The place looked like a real Wisconsin backwoods lodge with piney wood walls, rugged decor, outdoorsmen gear, dim lighting, leather but beyond the kitsch the food was good and yes, hearty. Excellent western style brisket, ribs and fried walleye. MAT liked table 133 (I think) in a less crowded rear room where it was easier to hear our conversation.

Andy’s Thai Kitchen …excellent find in Chicago

On a sloshy February day, we were cheered up by a superb lunch at Andy’s Thai Kitchen, a brand new cheerful little storefront beside the Wellington Street Brown Line El stop in Lincoln Park. I went with some tough customers from the foodie hotspot of Brooklyn ( soon to be from the foodie outpost of Los Angeles) and even they were impressed. Everything we ate was delicious – and often unique. My favorite entree was basil crispy pork, which was a mound of rice with thick crunchy bits of salty pork in a slightly sweet sauce, with withered basil, sliced mushrooms, garlic and chili. We also enjoyed the pork neck (sounds icky but isn’t), slices of marinated grilled pork that is served with a brown lime dipping sauce. Other good picks, Thai spring rolls, panang curry, pad Thai, pad see ew with perfectly cooked tofu, crispy on outside and moist inside. Good service and cheerful unassuming ambiance. The restaurant is near several others at Wellington and Sheffield, including Fish Bar and DMK Burgers.

Exploring downtown Chicago

I have walked past the Chicago Cultural Center dozens of times without ever noticing it – why, I don’t know. But today, I finally noticed and entered and was amazed at what a gorgeous building it is, full of intricate bejeweled mosaics, high ceilings with elegant mouldings, elegant glass domes including one by Tiffany. My son and I wandered through the public spaces and galleries (which were a bit tricky to find.) We stopped by the Vivian Maier show, which was worth a visit although not very extensive and seemed to be as much photos from New York and beyond as from chicago.

On the first floor, lots of people had gathered in seats in front of a stage where four musicians played a free concert. A sandwich bar in the lobby looked like a good lunch option.

For lunch, we went to The Gage, a lively gastropub on South Michigan – I had a hard time selecting an item from the menu because about all of them looked great. I finally settled on the mussels vindaloo – a huge bowl of freshly steamed juicy musles in a light burnt-umber colored broth with the not-over-powering Indian spice (Vindaloo can often mean searingly hot spice but this wasn’t.) My son had a huge hamburger with blue cheese that fortunately came with the upright fries piled into a mug-like bowl. All very good, pleasant and swift service, nice ambiance. Will definitely return.

We stopped at the Chicago Art Foundation to browse in the gift shop, one of the best around, and admire the huge model of downtown Chicago buildings. It’s got every building west of Oak Street and way past the loop. Incredibly cool. And every 15 minutes, the lights dim to simulate the sun hitting the buildings, casting some in high relief.

Names of those restaurants in Chicago and Evanston

Okay – here’s the names of the places we ate at during recent trip to Northwestern:

– Mario’s  on W. Goethe – a low-key neighborhood place near my Aunt’s Apartment near Astor and Division. The seafood pasta in a light broth-based sauce was very good. Meatballs with meat sauce also a hit.

– Melanthios Greek Char House on North Broadway in Lakeview Restaurant. Good char-broiled octopus served with little but oil, garlic and lemon; big greek salad minus lettuce; yummy moussaka. Huge portions. We shared everything. Good service by a waiter who loves the series “The Wire” which we’re also knee-deep in. And we ate outside at tables along the street. Not quite Athens but close enough.

– Dixie’s Kitchen in Evanston – I had the mini-southern sampler special for about $6.50 – a bowl of gumbo, jambalaya and red beans. Gumbo my fave but all good.

Dining in Chicago – some new favorites

I discovered some more great places to eat in Chicago during my visit there last weekend. They include:

– Shaw’s Crab House. This bustling, old-fashioned place, serves a tasty one-pound Lobster Boil for $22 in a lively dining room with attentive waiters. There’s also a cool bar that’s good for lunch – and has live jazz at night (or at least the Sunday night we were there.) The soft-shell crab got good reviews too.

– Taza is a fast-foody Middle Eastern restaurant at 176 S. Franklin Street, a block south of the Chicago River (handy for designers attending the annual NeoCon show at the nearby Merchandise Mart – which I also visited, tagging along with my sister-in-law, who is a designer in NYC).  A no-frills place with food shoveled into styrofoam-ware and served over the counter by cheerful men who are very generous with the free samples. The falafel was perfect – not too hard or soft or greasy. Also good chicken and turkey schwarma. Gyro meat and the lentil soup looked very good too.

– Brats at the Old Town Art Fair – served in a churchyard. Big juicy grilled. I ate it with a spicy topping of sauteed peppers and celery (that has an Italian-sounding name starting with a “g”)  It was dubbed “mild” but had quite the kick.
