Maggie Daley park, Hubbard street dance, Acanto, Neocon, Riverwalk — Chicago

My stay in Chicago has unexpectedly been prolonged, thanks to intense rain that led my 10:15 p.m southwest flight home from midway to be delayed two hours. At which point I was able to reschedule my flight at no cost to tomorrow at noon. Thank you Southwest. (Apparently this is possible after your flight is delayed more than an hour.)

Meanwhile, we had a good day in Chicago yesterday starting with a great performance by Hubbard street dance at the Harris Theatre. After the matinee, my sister and I walked around the new parts of Millenium Park/grant Park including

the lovely prairie gardens of Lurie Park and the cool kids playgrounds and snaking ice rink at Maggie Daley park, although I gather locals were not pleased that old live trees were cut down to make way for the playgrounds, which oddly feature bizarre dead trees. We had an excellent dinner outside overlooking Michigan avenue at Acanto, a new restaurant owned by the same person in charge of The Gage, next door, (try the chicken piccata and the Bellini desert- a scoop of peach sorbet in a pool of prosecco.)

Today I went with my sister–in -law, a designer, to NeoCon, the enormous commercial interior design show at the Merchandise Mart; then I walked along the new Riverwalk east to Michigan avenue. Chicago, looking good. Now if only it would stop raining.

Dance(e)volve: new works festival – a Hubbard Street Dance offshoot?

Looks like I’ll be in Chicago in early June so searching around, as usual, to see if there’s any dance performances and I’ve found one possibility – Hubbard Street Dance’s New Works program at the contemporary art museum. It’s not part of the official Hubbard season but could be interesting! From what I can gather, the show features new choreography largely by unknown choreographers, aka Hubbard Street dancers and staff.

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is about to unveil a new venture in original choreography, two separate programs of premieres, most of them created by its own dancers and staff.

The “danc(e)volve: New Works Festival,” playing Thursday through Jan. 29, alters the troupe’s typical winter engagement in several ways. The choreographers are largely local and unknown, while the venue, the Museum of Contemporary Art, is a departure from the company’s usual home at the Harris Theater.

The eclectic contemporary program danc(e)volve returns to the intimate Edlis Neeson Theater at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago where every seat is close to the stage. You’ll witness never-before-seen works by and for dancers.

Timing my visit to Chicago to catch Hubbard Street Dance Co.

Surely I’m not the only visitor to Chicago who times her trip so it coincides with the performance schedule of Chicago’s Hubbard Street Dance company. Or maybe I am. Anyway, just found out the spring series runs March 17-20 at the Harris Theater in Millennium Park. They’ll be performing works by Israeli choreographers from Tel Aviv’s Batsheva Dance Company. I’m there!
