“Whole-animal cooking” in Evanston (Illinois) – Found Kitchen and Social House

Always looking for places to eat in Evanston since our son is a junior at Northwestern and this suggestion comes today courtesy of the New York Times travel section: Found Kitchen and Social House at 1631 Chicago Ave. (847-868-8945) although wish the place took reservations! “Haute-but-homey” “seasonal small plates” “fracophile bent with whole-animal cooking.” (Whole-animal cooking? This presumably means eating the whole animal – including the heart and liver.)  I’ll skip the “pickled beef hearts with deviled eggs, beets and baby greens” but this sounds good: “chicken liver mouse with bacon marmalade and toast!” Also run by daughter of Morton’s Steak House owner…Gotta like the restaurant’s “social mission” below…

Found’s social mission, to “hire and train people coming out of homelessness” as a stepping stone to living more independent lives is fundamental to our philosophy.  The restaurant also stays mindful of the environment by repurposing found objects, recycling, composting, and supporting Evanston-area farms and businesses whenever possible.

when next in Evanston, Ill. – Hummingbird kitchen!

HummingBird Kitchen

HummingBird Kitchen

I won’t be taking my usual trip to Evanston, Illinois this fall because our son – a Northwestern junior – is studying in Lima (where we will travel to instead.) But when he returns to school in January, I’ll try to check out the Hummingbird Kitchen – a food truck that word has it has just two sandwiches including one that’s highly recommended by Midwest Living mag. – the lamb sandwich.  The place also has one of the more clever websites for a food truck, or any other enterprise come to think of it: see hummingbirdkitchen.com

Chicago restaurants to try….

I found myself taking six 19-year-olds out for lunch in Evanston, Illinois – upon my son’s return to Northwestern – which i was happy to do. But even happier when we went to Dixie’s – a fun Cajun place – that has a very parent-friendly menu of $6.95 lunch specials – including a good southwestern salad with grilled chicken, beans, corn salsa and a light creamy dressing and a sampler with little bowls of gumbo, jambalaya, and red beans and rice.
Now onto Chicago where E has these restaurants in mind:
This place is supposed to be great too, owned by the same people:
A combo of Asian and Mexican.

Holiday gift idea: a downtown gift card

A few years ago, my dad – at my request – got me a great gift: a gift card I could use to shop in a emerging hip neighborhood of shops and restaurants in downtown Des Moines called the East Village. It was a handy way to shop local AND shop well.  Fielding a request for gift ideas for my son who is a freshman at Northwestern University, I just looked online at the City of Evanston site and found it too has a gift card that can be used for downtown shops. I’m guessing other communities have this too…so worth a look.  My Google search for “downtown gift card”  unearthed cards for downtowns all over – St. Louis, Cincinnati, State College, Pa., Long Beach, California…often this stuff is listed on website for city or local tourism or chamber office.
