Some more restaurant finds in Chicago – and one hotel

I have been to Chicago more times than I can count but never stayed in a hotel – thanks to an abundance of generous relatives who live in and around the city – until last Sunday night. A friend called at the last minute inviting me to join her in Chicago for a one-night trip after her son couldn’t join her as planned. She’d already paid for the hotel and the bus tickets.

We stayed at the Chicago Hilton across from Grant Park – a grand old hotel with an enormous lobby with a high vaulted ceiling, lots of marble columns, chandeliers, sweeping carpeted staircases, big ballrooms. There’s also a photo display of scenes from Obama’s victory night party taken in and around the hotel. Our room was comfortable, spacious and clean.  I slept surprisingly well, for a hotel stay. My friend found some sort of deal for $161 a night – about $100 off the regular price.

For dinner, we went to the new trendy The Girl and The Goat – opened by former Top Chef winner Stephanie (can’t remember her last name) on Randolph Street. Fun and good small plates. Next time I’ll try the meat entrees – this time I stuck with vegetarian because  my friend is a vegetarian and we shared plates. We had the chickpea fritters, cauliflower and squash ravioli plates – all very complicated, flavorful dishes, surprisingly large portions for two people. The chickpea fritters were our favorite – because they tasted nothing like what we thought chickpea fritters would taste like. Not heavy and gritty. Instead light and creamy – more like polenta. Place was loud and dark but we were at a table where we could see and hear each other for the most part. Our server seemed disappointed we ordered so little (plus one drink apiece.) Oh well.

We ate breakfast the next morning at an old coffee shop – the Artist’s Cafe – on Michigan Avenue that has a storied history (visited by many Balanchine, Baryshnikov etc.) not to mention great hashbrowns and attentive service. Then onto the explore the Art Institute, new wing and old, and Millennium Park and saunter along Michigan Avenue where we ended up eating at the FoodLife food court in Water Tower place which was surprisingly good- although had almost too many choices. You get a little plastic card when you arrive and use that to record what you’ve bought, then pay when you leave. Good system although you can lose track of how much you’ve spent. My friend and I ultimately ended up with soup – shrimp and lobster bisque for me; Mediterranean lentil for her. Both good. And I had a fresh squeezed orange juice and my friend had coffee-flavored gelato.

We bought sandwiches from Potbelly around the block from Michigan avenue near DePaul University’s downtown campus – surprisingly good low-mayo tuna sub that worked well to eat on the megabus back to Des Moines.

Barcelona stylish budget hotels

Last I heard my brother was looking for a hotel to stay at in Barcelona. We were there in 1989 but don’t remember our hotel being anything special.  So here are four listed in a recent story in Budget Travel. They look like sets from a Pedro Almodovar movie:

– Chic & Basic Born – $118 a night no website address given

– 987 Barcelona – $106 a night 987.barcelonahotel.com

– Hotel Constanza – $119 hotelconstanza.com

– Room Mate Emma – $154  room-matehotels.com

Places to stay/dine – chicago

A friend from Maryland visited Chicago on a perfect summer weekend and loved the place. She liked where she stayed (Homewood Suites on Grand) and ate (Volari, Buca/boka? and some place she thinks was called Bizoni.)

VRBO – one more thumb’s up

My sister J reports that she’s used vacation rentals by owner (www.vrbo.com I think) several times to rent places to stay in northern Michigan and never been disappointed. Good to know! And I think I found the house of the chocolate-maker in Empire who told us about this website. http://www.vrbo.com/177844

One more Northern Michigan tip

A woman who runs a chocolate shop in Empire, Mi. recommended another website for renting places in that area – vrbo.com (which stands for “vacation rentals by owner” – she says it cuts out the middle-man/woman fee. worth a try although i was happy w/our visitupnorth.com rental.

and away we go…to northern michigan

With two hours to go before we roll out of town into the great unknown (not that great – just a cottage in northern Michigan that I choose from a vacation rental agency’s website)  my cell phone rings. I miss the call because I’m several rooms away but there’s a voicemail message. On comes the chipper voice of a woman who works at the vacation rental agency. She just wants to make sure we got this and that piece of information, to let us know the agency’s toll-free number, that they’re open seven days a week and we should call if we need anything.  I like that – and it’s good to hear as we start driving 11 hours to a cottage I don’t know much about other than a one-paragraph description and some photos on a website.  Hope it’s a good sign.

Renting a cottage in northern Michigan – so far so good

It’s always a leap of faith to rent a vacation cottage sight unseen – although the Internet has helped a lot by offering at least some photos. But even if the rooms look clean and somewhat spacious – will they be when you arrive.?And will you have rowdy neighbors throwing a wild and crazy party in their ramshackle trailer? As in life, there are no guarantees on vacation.

But so far I’ve been impressed by the staff at Visit Up North.com who  helped me book our cottage. I’ve called ahead and made sure about a few things that weren’t spelled out in the contract – yes there are linens for the sofabed, no there are no laundry facilities (but I was given the name of a good laundromat nearby.) Some good signs:   the staff are personable and seem to  know the area well. Now the proof is in the pudding.

takemewithyou: Big Sur

My sister and her family may be heading south after her son’s baseball tournament in Monterey so here’s some ideas for Big Sur:

– Don’t miss a walk around Point Lobos reserve, on the ocean with its strange brown-rust-and-green seaside vegetation and rocky cliffs where otters and seals bleat as waves crash onto the rocks.

– We always enjoy eating at the rustic Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn. We found Cafe Kiva at Nepenthe Restaurant overpriced ($4 for a lemonade back in 2001) but what a view!

– At Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park our then-young kids loved crawling and stepping into the huge redwoods. Nearby is Pfeiffer Beach – another favorite on the ocean.

– The drive from Big Sur to San Luis Obispo took about three hours and is, of course, stunning. We really liked San Luis – a college town (cal poly) with a great midweek farmers market on its long straight main street (all the shops were open that night too). Also home to the wonderfully kitschy Madonna Inn – at least visit and tour the goopy public rooms and eat some pie in the coffee shop.

Hearst Castle, again of course. We spent about three hours there with the kids, taking the tour and I’m not sure what else. gawking. dawdling.

More on Decorah, Iowa

Just for the record, we tried a few other restaurants along Water Street in Decorah – good sandwiches (although not the swiftest service) at Ede’s Gourmet and the Angry Pickle Deli (although I didn’t get an pickle, angry or not); and potent wake-me-up coffee and light not-too-sweet lemon poppy muffin tops at Java John’s, a welcoming,  bright and cheerful coffee house (vs. a dark, smokey,  grumpy, surly or hipper-than-thou coffee house, I’ve been to them all.)

Would have tried the sophisticated Rubaiyat:Food for Thought restaurant again (I had a great hamburger at the bar there last year) if it had been open Sunday night. We also dropped by the lovely Hotel Winneshiek which seems to be holding its own. (I always worry about these beautifully restored luxury boutique hotels in small towns after watching the exceptional Hotel Pattee in Perry, Ia. struggle.)

Dreaming of: Northern Michigan

With two weeks to go before our vacation on Big Glen Lake near Glen Arbor, Mi., we’re starting to line up some things – including a restaurant to meet our relatives (who are staying at the Sylvan Inn) at on Saturday night. Trattoria Funistrada http://www.trattoriafunistrada.com/ comes well recommended so will try to book there – it’s only 9 minutes from our cottage.
